Gatwick's two terminals explained
Gatwick has two terminals linked by a free shuttle train. Getting the right one first time saves a lot of walking.
North Terminal
One of Gatwick's two terminals, each with its own drop-off area. The Sofitel hotel is joined to the North Terminal by a walkway.
South Terminal
The South Terminal is connected to the Gatwick railway station. The Hilton hotel is joined to it by a short walkway.
Shuttle between them
A free inter-terminal shuttle runs between North and South. If you go to the wrong one, the shuttle is quick, but it is better to get it right.
Check your booking
Airlines move between terminals from time to time. Look at your booking confirmation and give us the terminal it shows.
The route from Croydon to Gatwick
This is a straight run south. From central Croydon the driver usually takes the A23 through Purley and Coulsdon, joins the M23 near the M25 junction at Hooley, and follows it to junction 9, where a short spur road leads to both terminals. In light traffic it is a quick and easy drive. On a Friday afternoon or the first morning of the school holidays it can be slower, so we plan pickup times with that in mind.
A typical trip is around 20 miles and takes 35 to 50 minutes. Pickups in Coulsdon and Purley are closer still, because they are already on the A23. From Addiscombe, Shirley or South Norwood, add a little time for the drive across town first.
Taxi or train to Gatwick?
There are fast trains from East Croydon to Gatwick, and if you are travelling light from near the station they are a good option. A taxi makes more sense when you have several cases or a pushchair, when your flight leaves before the first trains, or when you live somewhere like Sanderstead where getting to East Croydon is a journey of its own. It also means one fixed price for the whole group rather than a ticket each.
Dropping off and being collected
Your driver takes you to the drop-off area of the terminal you are flying from. Gatwick charges vehicles to use its terminal drop-off zones, so ask how this is handled when you book. For return trips, give us your flight number. The driver follows your flight, parks up and meets you in the arrivals area with your name on a board, then takes you to the car.
Gatwick hotels before an early flight
Some people prefer to stay the night at the airport before a very early departure. We can take you to any Gatwick hotel the evening before using our hotel transfer taxi, and collect you again when you are back.
Groups, pets and extra luggage
For a family of five or six with luggage, a 6 seater taxi is the usual choice. Golf bags, ski bags and big holiday cases are easier in a 7/8 seater. If you are taking your dog to a kennel or a pet carrier near the airport, ask about our pet friendly taxi.

It is about 20 miles by road. A typical trip takes 35 to 50 minutes depending on traffic on the A23 and M23.
Can you take me to the North Terminal or the South Terminal?
We go to both. Check your airline booking for the terminal and tell us when you book.

Yes, we work 24/7. We follow your flight, so a late landing is not a problem.
What cars can I book for Gatwick?
